Whether you’re living in a quaint Cotswold cottage or a modern semi in Manchester, maintaining the outside of your home is just as important as keeping the inside cosy and clean. The UK's ever-changing weather — from lashing rain to summer heatwaves — can take its toll on exterior features. So, a little regular TLC can save you money in the long run and boost your home’s kerb appeal.
Here’s a handy guide to help you stay on top of exterior home maintenance.
1. Roof and Gutters: First Line of Defence
Your roof takes the brunt of British weather, so it deserves regular checks — especially after storms.
Inspect for missing or cracked tiles at least twice a year.
Clean out gutters of leaves, moss, and debris to prevent blockages and water damage.
Consider installing gutter guards if trees are nearby.
2. Brickwork and Pointing: Hold It Together
Older UK homes often feature beautiful brickwork, but over time, weathering can weaken the mortar.
Check for crumbling or missing mortar (this is called “repointing” when you repair it).
Look for damp patches on internal walls — this could be a sign of penetrating damp from failing pointing.
3. Windows and Doors: Functional and Fabulous
Wooden frames, common in older homes, can rot, while uPVC can discolour over time.
Repaint or stain wooden frames every few years to protect them.
Lubricate hinges and locks to keep them operating smoothly.
Seal any gaps to improve insulation and reduce drafts.
4. Fencing and Gates: Boundaries Matter
Strong winds and winter storms can play havoc with fencing.
Check for wobbly posts or panels and replace damaged sections.
Treat timber with preservative annually to guard against rot and insects.
Ensure gates open and close properly — a sagging gate can be easily fixed with new hinges or adjustments.
5. Driveways and Paths: Safe and Smart
Algae and moss make driveways slippery and unsightly.
Pressure wash paving to remove grime and growth.
Re-sand block paving joints to prevent weed growth.
Fill in cracks in tarmac before they expand.
6. Exterior Walls and Paintwork
Peeling paint or render isn't just an eyesore — it can let damp in.
Repaint pebbledash, brick or render every 5–10 years, depending on exposure.
Clean painted surfaces with a mild detergent to prevent grime buildup.
Look out for cracks in render that could lead to water ingress.
Regular maintenance doesn’t just keep your home looking its best — it prevents small issues from becoming expensive repairs. Set a seasonal reminder to do a walk-around of your property, and keep a checklist of jobs. And if in doubt, don’t be afraid to call in the professionals — it’s worth it for peace of mind.
Your home protects you — show it a little love in return.
